A price of 1.11 is the market saying something is roughly 90% certain. It did not happen, and the winner came from about 11.00 — roughly a 9% shot.
Why That Market Was Always Vulnerable
The Golden Ball was priced like a production market when it is actually a voting market. Messi’s 8 goals and 4 assists were the best attacking return of any creator at the tournament, and a price of 1.11 followed from that. But the award does not go to the top of the stat sheet — it goes to whoever voters judge the tournament’s best player, and that judgement moved in the final.
What moved it:
- Messi was held scoreless in the final, and Argentina lost.
- Rodri captained a side that won all eight matches and conceded once, and played 120 minutes against a team that never had a shot on target.
- Rodri’s ~756 completed passes was a tournament record, past Xavi’s 599.

The lesson for punters is not that the market was foolish. It is that voting markets and result markets behave differently: when a subjective panel decides and one match can flip the narrative, a 1.11 favourite carries far more risk than the price implies.

Mbappe finished on 10 goals. Two things make it historic:
