The tournament is done and every market is settled. The final produced a situation that recurs in every knockout tie that goes to extra time, and that plenty of punters get wrong: the draw won the 90-minute 1X2 while Spain won the outright — in the same match.

Every World Cup market is now closed and settled. One match, two correct settlements.

The Final’s Two Markets

The match finished 0-0 in normal time. Spain scored in the 106th minute and won.

Market Closing line Outcome Settled as
1X2 (90 minutes) Spain 2.25–2.30 · Draw 2.95–3.00 · Argentina 3.60 0-0 after 90 Draw (X)
To lift the trophy (incl. extra time and penalties) Spain 1.67 · Argentina 2.30 Spain won in extra time Spain

So: backing the draw in the 90-minute market won. Backing Spain to lift the trophy won. Backing Spain in the 90-minute 1X2 lost — even though Spain are world champions.

The rule worth remembering: in knockout matches the 1X2 settles on 90 minutes, while outright and to-lift markets settle on the full match including extra time. It is not a trap, it is a definitional difference — but it is the single most common misunderstanding in knockout betting.

The Four Outright Markets

Market Winner Closing price Favourite delivered?
World Cup winner Spain 1.67 (FanDuel) / 1.72 (Kalshi) Yes — but only in extra time
Golden Boot Mbappe (10 goals) 1.04 Yes
Golden Ball Rodri Messi favourite ~1.11; Rodri ~11.00 No
Golden Glove Unai Simon 1.13 Yes

The Golden Boot was effectively decided the day before the final: Mbappe’s brace in the third-place match took him to 10 and shut the market. Messi’s drift out to 13.00 proved correct — he was held scoreless in the final.

The Goalscorer Market

None of the listed favourites scored: Messi 2.50, Oyarzabal 2.60, Yamal 3.30. The goal came from Ferran Torres, a 62nd-minute substitute who had not scored in the tournament, sitting well out in longshot territory around 16.00 or higher.

There is a structural point here. Finals are unusually prone to longshot goalscorers, because deciding goals often arrive late and often from the bench. In this one, both players involved in the goal — the header and the finish — were substitutes.

The Tournament’s Numbers

World Cup 2026 was the first with 48 teams and 104 matches, played 11 June to 19 July across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Measure Value
Total goals 308 — the highest-scoring edition ever
Goals per match 2.96
Total attendance 6,810,966 — an all-time record, roughly double 1994
Average attendance 65,490 per match
Highest-scoring match England 6-4 France (third-place match) — the most goals in a World Cup game since 1982

From Down Here

The All Whites’ tournament ended in the group stage, so from the knockouts onward this was neutral viewing from Aotearoa — but it was a good tournament to watch neutrally, and the scheduling was unusually kind. The final landed at 7am on a Monday rather than the middle of the night.

Two things worth carrying forward. Erling Haaland finished joint third on 7 goals, Norway’s best World Cup return, in a campaign where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time. And the tournament that produced Spain’s men’s title is the same one that completed a record begun in 2023 at the Women’s World Cup staged on our own grounds.

With the tournament over, all World Cup markets are now closed and settled. Partners such as Boomerang Bet and Rabona price these markets in NZD, and TAB NZ remains the local option — but there is nothing live to price until the next cycle.

Why did the draw win the 1X2 if Spain won the final?
The match was 0-0 after 90 minutes, and knockout 1X2 markets settle on normal time only. Spain’s winner came in extra time, which counts for the outright and to-lift markets but not the 90-minute 1X2.
Did the favourites deliver at World Cup 2026?
Mostly. Spain, Mbappe and Simon all won as favourites. The Golden Ball was the only market where the favourite lost, with Rodri beating Messi from around 11.00.
What were the tournament’s record numbers?
308 goals across 104 matches — the highest-scoring edition ever — and total attendance of 6,810,966, an all-time record averaging 65,490 per match.
